To make matters worse, the economy system is even more time consuming because you have to set up so many resource structures. To build things you now have to pay up front instead of just having a steady enough flow of mass and energy. The gameplay tries to live up to that of the first game, but ultimately fails due to the degree to which everything has been simplified. My least favorite character is the villain, who tries to come across as sinister but only succeeds is making himself look like a crazy person of the type you would find a loony bin. It does try to have some depth, but any attempt at this is mired by terrible writing and voice acting that is often even worse. Just like SC1, the second game tells more or less the same conflict from the perspectives of three different commanders, each belonging to one of the three factions. The problem with this is the fact that the first game didn't really have a story worth mentioning.
The story is not so much worse then that of the first game. Lesser scale, story (from what little there was in the first game to begin with), and dumbed down game mechanics make this a classic case of sequel slump.
