The ProtonMail secure email app for Android brings easy-to-use email encryption to your mobile device by seamlessly integrating PGP end-to-end encryption. I would say I should reinstall but it was literally installed last night and signed in, the app is working as it should other than this as well.ProtonMail is the world’s largest encrypted email service with millions of users. Seeing this on my newly installed ProtonMail app, there is a persistent notification which I can't clear and I also keep getting an enormous amount of stacked notifications, any ideas? Finally, I've noticed that I'm not getting new email notifications, just this persistent one that keeps duplicating.

In addition to this, I am not seeing anything being blocked by my network firewall so I don't think it's that it can't connect or anything like that (and emails are updated). Update: I've also noticed that PM has used 27% of my battery today on my Z Fold 3, so something is definitely up. But so far it's been about 12 hours with no weird "retrieving notifications" stuff. Update 2: So I reinstalled the app and I think things are good now, I haven't added my secondary PM account to it yet though so maybe it was related to that, will do more testing today. The reason it was happening to me SO much was because I just imported 125k emails to PM about 5k which weren't marked read so I was going through All Mail and marking them read page by page. PM now updates read statuses and this is the notification you get when that happens. SOLVED! Figured out what the issue was and it's actually not a bug but a feature (and not in a sarcastic way).
